The outcome of the eight hours of a very well-planned event, although with minimal disruption of Lagos traffic, for the 8th edition of the Access Bank/Lagos City marathon on Saturday, 15th February 2025, culminated in the East African countries clinching the crème de la crème of the marathon prizes.
A whooping sum of USD 240,000 (circa N500,000,000.00k) was carted away by just six athletes from two East African countries, Ethiopia and Kenya.
A Kenyan, Edwin Kibet Koech, emerged as the winner of the eighth edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, 2025, clocking 2 hours 14 minutes, to stand shoulder high above other scores of competitors.
The first runner-up was Dekeba Tafa, from Ethiopia, and the 2nd runner-up was Bernard Sang, from Kenya.
For the women category, Alemeneshi Herena Guta, from Ethiopia was the first woman to cross the finish line. The 1st runner-up was Urisa Kebene Chala, from Ethiopia. The 2nd runner-up was Naomi Maiyo from Kenya
Recall that the 42km marathon commenced from the National Stadium, Surulere, proceeded through Ikorodu road towards Anthony (Bertola) and moved through Gbagada to access the Third Mainland Bridge, heading inbound Lagos Island.
From there, the race continued through Dolphin Road, leading to Alfred Rewane Road, and onward to Falomo Roundabout. The race route passed through Bourdillon Road, and crossed the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge to connect Admiralty Way. From Admiralty Way, the route extended to Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue and continued through Akin Adesola, which concluded at Ahmadu Bello Way, Eko Atlantic, former bar beach.
Winners in both the male and female categories bagged a princely sum of USD50,000, while the first runner-up clinched USD40,000 and the second runner-up earned USD30,000
In all, the total prize money distributed to winners amounted to USD240,000, about N500,000,000.00K
However, an investigation is ongoing but yet to confirm what fraction of the bank’s loan portfolio went to small and medium businesses
