MAKIA-Protest

The rage against the airlines that have consistently defaulted in remitting the Ticket Sale Charge, TSC, has refused to go and it’s still somehow palpable even in the gentle breeze that flows throughout Nigeria’s air space

By the present disposition of the workers, Seems the two unions leading the efforts to retrieve the airlines’ debt- the National Union of Air Transport Employees, NUATE, and the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, ATSSSAN- have opted for the historic apostolic mode to accomplish their goal as they entreated the Airline Operators of Nigeria, AON, to repent of their sins.

In the latest media statement, the unions entreated the airline operators not only to repent of their sins, but they should also grant workers the freedom to unionize and to voluntarily settle the accumulated Ticket Sales Charge, TSC, debt.

The statement without equivocation said the unions “were ready to strike at any time without further notice. We hereby magnanimously issued a 3-Day Notice of Strike upon the defaulting domestic airlines”.
The grouse the unions laid before the airliners included;

  1. Making unfettered unionization of staff in their organization impossible after several efforts by the aviation unions. Their workers dare not even express the intention to belong to unions of their choices.
  2. Non-remittance of the already collected, but withheld 5% ticket sales charge, which is the operational
  3. fund of the aviation agencies, thereby rendering our members negotiated collective bargaining agreements at the aviation agencies nugatory so far. This continues to breed disgruntled air transport workers; the implication of which is accident in the waiting!

  4. The workers’ leadership still expressed optimism that the 72 hours ultimatum granted the airliner to accede to their prayers is such a long time, good enough for aircraft operators to act and prevent the picketing.

  5. Taking cognizance of the date on the letter of notice which bears the 7th day of August; the 72 hours will lapse on Monday 10th of August with all the likelihood of flight operations to be disrupted beginning on Monday or Tuesday 11th August should the debtor airlines maintain status quo ante ultimatum.
