Late Professor Oladipo Theophilus Ogunlesi, the first Nigerian Professor of Medicine
Nigeria mourns the passage of the foremost Professor of Medicine, and one of the pioneers of Western Orthodox Medical practice in the world’s most populous black nation- Nigeria.
The late Professor Oladipo Theophilus Ogunlesi was the father to Dr. Adebayo Ogunlesi, the owner of London Gatwick Airport. LGW.
A media statement released by the family announced thus, “with eternal gratitude to the almighty God for a life of purpose, dignity, integrity, and distinction, the Ogunlesi family announced the transition to glory to join his beloved wife, Olorunfemi, of our father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Emeritus Professor, Theophilus Oladipo Ogunlesi, LRCP, MRCS, FRCP (Edin), FRCP (Lon), FMCP, FWACP, Hon Dsc, (Ibadan), Hon Dsc, (OOU), FAS, OFR.

Pa Ogunlesi was the First Nigerian Professor of Medicine and first Nigerian Emeritus Professor of Medicine, first Nigerian Head of the Department of Medicine, University College Hospital, Ibadan. Inaugural Director of the Ibarapa Community Health Program, Oyo State, and first President of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.
The statement which was signed by the eldest child, ‘Leke, said the Great Grandpa, Theophilus Oladipo Ogunlesi, departed this life peacefully at his home in Shagamu, Ogun State, in the evening of Thursday, 19th January 2023, at the ripe old age of 99 years.
Pa Ogunlesi is survived by his children, Adeleke, Adekunle, Adebayo, Folasade, Afolabi, and Adegbenga, their spouses, numerous grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements the statement said, will be announced in due course by the family.
The children prayed for their father, an icon, a very distinguished Nigerian, and primus inter pares in the practice of western orthodox medicine on the West coast of Africa thus, “May the soul of the wonderful man rest in perfect peace”.
May the souls of the departed ones rest in the bosom of the almighty God, their creator.
