AIB collaborative stance is to ensure fool proof report

Nigeria’s air Accident Investigation Bureau, AIB, has established regional offices in all the geo political region of the country with the view to facilitate prompt response by well trained and skillful personnel to the site of any fatality or serious incident in the course of an unforeseen occurrence.
Having created adequate regional offices with adequate personnel, the bureau has even begun the very rare initiative of cultivating a very broad and wide spectrum of efficient and effective collaborations with various government agencies, departments, both locally and internationally.
The AIB Commissioner/Chief Executive, Engr Akin Olateru, made these known at a public parley among aviation industry stakeholders, in an event at the Nike Lake Resort Hotel, Enugu, Enugu state.
At the forum which was a regional enlightenment for operators in the South East geopolitical zone of the country, the commissioner who was ably represented by the General Manager, Public Affairs, Mr. Tunji Oketunmbi, m vade it clear that the bureau will not relent in continuously raising the bar on air safety in the nation’s air space.
Olateru made it known that if not for the recent fatality in Opebi, Lagos, the industry had recorded half a decade free of any fatality and as such, the agency will continue to vigorously exert itself in ensuring the quality of its report on any incident or accident will be impeccable in all ramifications.
He explained that, the resolve to be able to produce a clinically finished accident report and where germane, to also generate a fool proof recommendation, the bureau had embarked on collaborations with organizations within and outside Nigeria to achieve high professionalism in its service delivery.
Olateru reiterated that AIB “seeks the cooperation and support of all industry stakeholders. As I said earlier, safety is a collective responsibility and accident investigation process cannot be done alone; the airlines, regulatory bodies, aircraft manufacturers, Air Traffic Controllers, first responders i.e. Police, Federal Safety Corps (FRSC), Civil Defense, everyone who is a stakeholder in the industry needs to work hand in hand with the Bureau in order to ensure thorough investigations are conducted and the reports timely published”.
He said AIB “continuously looking for ways to improve our system at AIB because safety is a collective responsibility even as learning and gaining knowledge is a continuous process. And we will like to share knowledge and also learn as we expand our scope if possible”.
Akin Olateru further acquainted his audience with lofty consequences from the bureau’s brilliant performance by saying, “AIB success story has really impressed not only agencies in the country but other nations. For example, South Africa asked their consultant to come and examine how we are doing it: what is it we are doing that is different, in order to see what they can replicate into their own operations”.
He said that, “the current administration of the Bureau has also engaged in international collaborations and cooperation agreements with several countries and institutions such as Republic of Benin, US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Singapore Transport Safety Investigation Bureau (TSIB), Bureau d’Enquêtes et d’Analyses pour la sécurité de l’aviation civile (BEA- France) and UK AAIB.
AIB’s helmsman affirmed that, “the Bureau is doing a lot in terms of cooperation and collaboration with the aim of improving safety in the industry and ensuring that accident investigations are effectively and efficiently carried out successfully
