AIB-N Ready To Take On Multimodal Transportation Incidents, Accidents Investigation

The leadership in the highly-rated agency for the investigation of serious incidents and air accidents in Nigeria, the Accident Investigation Bureau-Nigeria, AIB-N, has pledged to continue extending the frontiers of safety in the aviation sector, as well as in the other forms of transportation’s incident and accidents.
This sacred vow was made on a very solemn occasion on Sunday, 20th February 2022, at the Ladi Kwali Hall, Sheraton Hotel, Abuja, to commemorate the International Day of Air Crash Victims, and their Loved ones and family.
The Commissioner/Chief Executive Officer, CEO, AIB-N, Engr Akin Olateru, speaking at the commemoration as directed by the International Civil Aviation Organization, ICAO, stated unequivocally, that the avoidable loss of lives from air crashes were unacceptable.
He said AIB-N as a corporate entity will not relent in reviewing and improving on its “systems, processes and procedures to reduce casualties associated with any transportation incidents and provide the information and other support systems necessary to fulfil our mandate”, Olateru said.
He explained the modus operandi for achieving the bureau’s set goals thus, “we will achieve this by aligning ourselves with global best practice in the industry, and by employing the latest technology and the most qualified personnel, to thoroughly investigate past occurrences and make the appropriate recommendations to ensure that they never occur again”
Engr Olateru on behalf of the Federal Government, FG, expressed a very deep and heartfelt “sympathy to all the survivors and families of victims of past incidents. I am truly sorry for your losses, and I know that no one can ever adequately compensate you he stated”
He explained that the Family Assistance program takes cognizance of “Families of victims who often experienced great anguish after an air crash, especially in the absence of effective information channels from the government, or the affected airline operator, to the victims’ relations”
He however affirmed that with the new Act passed by the National Assembly, (NASS) establishing the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), AIB had since been equipping itself by building the capacity of its investigators in a wide array of transformation
He said the trained manpower and efficient management of the bureau’s imminent task rolling back its frontiers in an accident and serious incident investigation to superintend over the road, rail, water, cable and air, would further safety in the entire intermodal transportation chain, in the light of the new act- NSIB.
The Director-General, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, Capt Musa Nuhu, promised to improve on the existing collaboration between it and AIB.
Representative of the Aviation Safety Round Table Initiative, ASRTI, Group Capt Onitiju, commended the gesture by ICAO and the AIB for tagging along by ensuring the maiden commemoration took place in spite of its short notice from the global boy, ICAO.
A representative of the families of victims of the air crash, Eric Bricks, requested that should such unforeseen event as air crash happens, information he said should never be hoarded.
Mr Eric said being in total darkness on such occasion was like adding salt into an injury hence he urged the concerned agencies to avoid reoccurrence.
Also present was the Director of Air Safety, Federal Ministry of Aviation, Capt Alkali who represented the Minister, Hadi Sirika, among others.
