Anthony Joshua limped with pain to board the security vehicle that conveyed him to a private hospital in Lagos State
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has consoled Anthony Joshua, AJ, through a presidential telephone call, on the ghastly road crash involving the former world boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, two of his friends, and another acquaintance.
The president, who is out of the country on a state assignment, also reached out to the mother of AJ to reassure her of excellent health care for her son, AJ, and the other survivor of the fatal crash.
Two casualties have been confirmed. They are two of AJ’s close associates, Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami.
President Bola Tinubu said he spoke on the phone with boxer Anthony Joshua and his mother following the tragic accident in Ogun State in which the former heavyweight champion was injured and lost two of his associates, Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami.
According to a media statement by the President’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the President, in a telephone conversation with AJ, wished him well and prayed for him. While AJ informed the president that he is receiving the best care in the hospital.
Furthermore, both Ogun and Lagos state governments have announced that the heavyweight world boxing champion, Anthony Joshua and another passenger are stable after comprehensive clinical assessments conducted on them at a Lagos medical facility.
This statement, jointly signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor of Ogun State on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, and the Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, succeeded in allaying the fears of Nigerians and boxing fans worldwide about Johnson’s life and the quality of medical care.
However, a statement by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), claimed that the outcome of its preliminary investigation attributed the accident to overspeeding and wrongful overtaking.
The preliminary findings indicated that the Lexus Jeep was suspected to be travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit on the corridor, lost control during an overtaking maneuvering and crashed into a stationary truck well packed by the right shoulder of the road.
FRSC report claimed thus, “The primary causes of the crash, being excessive speed and wrongful overtaking, constitute serious traffic violations and remain among the leading causes of fatal road crashes on Nigerian highways,” the report affirmed.
Shehu Mohammed, the Corps Marshal, expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured, Joshua and the other survivor a speedy recovery.
