The Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, has commissioned the Ekiti State Agro-Allied International Airport, Ado-Ekiti, for public use shortly after the inaugural flight from Abuja smoothly landed in the airport Saturday, morning.
Sen. Hadi Sirika, said the newly inaugurated Agro-Allied Airport will open up the state to play a better and prosperous role in global commerce and tourism if fully harnessed and managed.
He announced that the Federal Government had concluded plans to site a cargo facility at the airport.
Sirika described the Ekiti Airport as “an extremely very important project which would in turn facilitate the import and export of goods and commodities.”
He quoted the dictum peculiar to aviators by saying that “a mile-long road leads to nowhere, but a one-mile runway leads to everywhere”, Sirika said.
The Minister further said, “Airports are by no means the best catalysts for economic growth of any state or nation.
He said Ekiti as a state can be land-locked, but the state cannot be sky-locked hence the importance of having a facility like an airport.
Governor Fayemi however acknowledged the poor condition of most of the federal roads in the state and assured the people that the presence of the airport will provoke federal government attention to the improvement of the roads as a complement to the newly inaugurated cargo airport.
The total land mass acquired for the ultra-modern cargo airport is 4,017 hectares from nine communities namely; Ago Aduloju, Aso Ayegunle, Bolorunduro, Igbogun, Araromi, Obbo, Afao, Orun, Igbemo and Ijan, covering three local government areas in the state, Fayemi said.
Dignitaries at the event included the wife of the Governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi; the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Chief Adeniyi Adebayo; the Deputy Governor, Chief Bisi Egbeyemi; Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Honourable Funminiyi Afuye; Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Netherlands, Dr Eniola Ajayi; Representatives of Ekiti in Diaspora, traditional rulers, state lawmakers and among others.

Inauguration of Ekiti airport by the aviation minister was another means to mismanagement the south west commonwealth unconsciouslyby the south west governors. These humongous amounts of naira expend-ended on this unviable should have been used for empowerment generation industry to engage millions of unemployed citizens in the Southwest, or better be used to reduce the debt burdensome imposes on the states by the state governments. This new Ekiti airport was a penny wise, pound foolish decision as applicable to all unviable airports nationwide.
