Event centers, fuel stations, house owners, urge to avoid parking on walkways, cooperate with LASPA

CHAOTIC PARKING: LASPA to return sanity into parking throughout Africa’s foremost smart city- Lagos

Residences, hotels, fuel stations, event centers, and other private and public facilities have been urged to comply with the approved number of vehicles their facilities can accommodate, to avert overflow onto the walkway and its attendant’s disruptions to the flow of vehicular movement on the roads.

Engr Abdul Hafeez Toriola, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, gave the charge during a working visit to the Lagos State Parking Authority, LASPA, at Government Reservation Area, GRA, Ikeja.

The Permanent Secretary said the government of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, had resolved to entrench the principles of sustainable urban mobility in the state, so that travel time will be drastically improved.

He said the goal of a smooth, less cumbersome urban mobility informed the State Government’s commitment to a well-structured, and unified parking system in Lagos state.

Toriola informed his host that, the Ministry will synergize with LASPA and other relevant agencies to improve traffic management and transportation across the State, in consonance with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s T.H.E.M.E.S. agenda for the state’s social and economic growth.

In her welcome speech, the General Manager of LASPA, Mrs. Adebisi Adelabu, solicited the Ministry’s support in achieving its mandate, saying the Agency is working towards integrating all the 57 Local Governments (LGs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the State, into a unified Parking System.

She explained that the Agency’s statutory responsibility is to set up and operate a more efficient parking system adding that, the Agency is embarking on a sensitization drive to enlighten and educate the public about its activities through various media.

The LASPA’s General Manager further said the vision of the State Government is to decongest Lagos roads by regulating all forms of parking, and registering existing private and public parks into a well-designed and coordinated parking system.
