First and Last Mile Mini Bus Initiative, A Sustainable Mass Transit Project- Toyin Fayinka

The First and Last Mile, FLM, minibus transportation initiative launched by the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, about five (5) months ago, has come to stay as it’s a well-thought-out intervention to commuting challenge in the inner and major routes in the State.
The Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Transportation, Hon. Oluwatoyin Fayinka made this declaration at a consultative meeting held at the State Police Command Ikeja.
At the meeting were the Commissioner of Police, CP, Hakeem Odumosu, Leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Lagos Chapter, Musiliu Akinsanya, and representative of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Hon. Albert Omotayo, Deputy Chairman (OPS) in attendance.
The meeting was organized to seek full cooperation of the Transport Stakeholders in the State on the smooth operation of the First and Last Mile (FLM) buses launched to enhance inner community routes mode of transportation
Hon. Fayinka who presided at the meeting urged both the NURTW and RTEAN to cooperate with the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) for the smooth running of the FLM buses.
The buses had since been deployed to a few areas of the State which included Surulere/Aguda, Yaba/Somolu, Lagos Island/Eti-Osa, Victoria Island/Iru and Ikorodu.
The Transportation Special Adviser reiterated that the State Government will not tolerate any form of harassment from individuals or Unions on the smooth running of the minibuses operations on their designated routes.
Fayinka also charged all the transport unions in Lagos state to cooperate with the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, LAMATA, in synergizing to fulfil their obligations to the commuting members of the public by providing safe, reliable, efficient, and sustainable transport services to the good people of Lagos state.
Also speaking at the consultative forum, the Commissioner of Police, CP, Hakeem Odumosu, assured Stakeholders of the Lagos State Police Command’s unflinching support.
Odumosu disclosed that the Area Commanders and DPOs in all Local Government and Local Council Development Areas had been directed to ensure at all times, the safety of both commuters and the operators of the FLM buses.
Recall that 500 FLM buses, as well as 100 High-Capacity buses were launched by the Governor of Lagos State on 18th May 2021, to enhance passengers’ connectivity between inner and major routes in the State.
