SULTAN OF SOKOTO

As all the Nigerian pilgrims to Saudi Arabia for the 2026 hajj are settling down for the exercise, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has declared that Monday, 18th of May 2026, is the first day of Zulhijja 1447AH.

The declaration was contained in a statement issued on Sunday night by Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman, Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council of Sokoto, Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu.

The public declaration signified the beginning of the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar, a significant period during which the Muslim ummah across the world begins the actual performance of the annual Hajj pilgrimage and prepares for the Eid al-Adha celebrations.

The Sultanate Council urged the ummah, especially in Nigeria and globally, to use the sacred month for prayers, sacrifice, and acts of charity for peace, unity, and progress in the country.

In the statement, Prof Junaidu called on the ummah to uphold the teachings of Islam and continue to pray for the nation’s stability, peace and harmony in moving the country forward to greater heights.
