The Bell 429 Police Helicopter at Bauchi Airport
An investigation has begun into the accident of the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, Bell 429 helicopter which occurred at 7.30 pm, on Wednesday, 26th January 2022, at the Bauchi airport.
According to Accident Investigation Bureau- Nigeria, AIB-N, a Bell 429 helicopter with Registration Marks 5N-MDA, owned and operated by the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), had departed Abuja at 16:54 UTC for Bauchi with Six persons on board and maintained a flight level of 5,500ft.
The air accident and incident investigation Bureau reported that there were some injuries but no fatality. A media statement by AIB solicited for the cooperation of embers of the general public thus; “AIB-N needs and hereby solicits for your assistance. We want the public to know that we would be amenable to receiving any video clips, pieces of evidence, or information any member of the public may have of the accident that can assist us with this investigation.
It however made an appeal that, “the Bureau will appreciate t the general public and press respect the privacy of the people involved and NOT assume the cause of the accident until the formal report is released”.

OCCUPANTS SUFFERED NO INJURY, HELICOPTER MADE A SAFE LANDING- NPF
The Nigeria Police Force, NPF, has retracted the claim by the statutory agency for the investigation of serious air incident and accident in Nigeria, AIB, with a media statement that occupants of its Bell 429 helicopter that crash-landed at Bauchi airport on Wednesday, 26th January 2022, sustained no injury.
A media statement by the spokesman for NPF, Commissioner of Police, Frank Mba, said all the six people on board including the pilot and co-pilot are in good condition.
The police in its statement also rephrased what AIB said was an accident as an alleged accident and the entire scenario was described, as a safe landing with minor damage on the rear rotor of the helicopter as a result of obstacles at the landing spot.
The Nigeria Police affirmed that the aircraft was flown by one of its best Police Pilots, and highlighted the fleet of the Nigeria Police Air-wing thus– one fixed-wing aircraft, a citation jet and thirteen (13) helicopters while it also said Air Wing was replete with proven records of air safety since 1972 when the wing came into existence.
The statement said the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Usman Alkali Baba, had applauded the Police Air-Wing for its professionalism especially for safe-landing the aircraft and averting any serious air-mishap
