Junction Improvement Project Attains 46% Completion, Begins to Impact Lagos Traffic – Frederic Oladeinde

Just because the present government of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwoolu is committed to efficient and effective rural and urban mobility, the government has achieved 46.6% in the execution of the junction improvement project which is part of the solution to the incessant traffic bottleneck at most of the junctions in the metropolis.

By the pace of work, another 36% of the project has reached various advanced stages of completion which is sure to come to fruition on or before the year runs out, thus 82% of the 60 junctions reconfigured project which is critical to the smooth flow of traffic on various roads in the state would have been completed.

According to the Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Frederic Oladeinde, while briefing the media as part of the activities to commemorate the second year anniversary of Governor Sanwoolu in office, the erudite scholar said of the 60 junctions identified for improvement barely four months to the regime’s assumption of office in 2019, 28 of the junctions being reconfigured have been completed and being in use while 22 are in different stages of completion.

Oladeinde said those junctions have been able to accommodate traffic demand of their individual areas and have proved as a means to achieving sustainable solutions that will address traffic congestion, improve the transportation needs of the people, reduce travel time by a wide margin and enhance the safety of lives and productivity of Lagosians.

Some of the junctions which have been completed according to the Commissioner include; Maryland Junction, Allen Avenue/Awolowo Road Junction, Ikotun Roundabout, Lekki Roundabout 1 and 2, Abraham Adesanya Junction, Apongbon/Eko Bridge, Muri Okunola Roundabout, Abila Abiodun Oniru Junction, and Ligali Ayorinde/Akinbolagbe/Okene Junction, to mention but few.

Oladeinde assured that with the reconfiguration works done on the junctions and roundabouts, which include; proper lane marking, channelization, intelligent traffic light signalization and installation of other facilities, congestion at the gridlock points he noted, had drastically improved.

The Commissioner enthused, ”since the completion of these Junction/Roundabout reconfiguration projects, we have noticed a significant improvement in traffic management along these corridors, commuters travel time is saved, while the usual traffic gridlocks have reduced considerably.” Oladeinde said.

Dr Oladeinde chronicled areas among the 22 junctions that have currently benefited from the ongoing reconfiguration to include; Ijaye Road, Wempco road, Ireshe Road, Alhaji Salami, Ikorodu and Isolo way, Afariogun, Ajao Estate and others. He announced that the projects are nearing completion. He added that 10 others including; Opebi Oregun Link Road, Awolowo Ikoyi, are still under the concept design stage.

He further explained that with the “Traffic Management Intervention Plan” (TMIP), as each junction was being completed, so were the direct impact on the proper use of road carriageway, pedestrian walkways, parks and garages, among others, were being felt

The Transportation Commissioner said that with the reconfiguration works done on the junctions and roundabouts, which include; proper lane marking, channelization, intelligent traffic light signalization and installation of other facilities, congestion at the gridlock points had drastically improved.

He however sought the cooperation of road users in the actualization and completion of all the junctions and roundabouts improvement works and urged all the good citizens of Lagos State to display utmost responsibility and maturity by maintaining law and order while plying the roads while the State Government continues in its efforts at achieving an effective and efficient transportation system for everyone, old or young, rich or poor, male or female.
