A boat sideways on the high sea. Threat to passenger’s lives
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, NSIB, has commenced an investigation into the boat mishap that occurred at Kpada community in Pategi Local Government Area of Kwara State, on Monday night, 12th June 2023.
A media statement from NSIB, said from reports gathered thus far, the boat was reported to have conveyed about 250 passengers from a village called Egboti, in Niger State.
NSIB also said information received revealed that 106 fatalities were recorded and a total of 144 passengers were rescued so far.
Enunciating the bureau’s approach to unravel the immediate and remote causes of the boat mishap, the Director General, NSIB, Engr Akin Olateru, at a media briefing in his office at Abuja said, “In order to carry out this mandate, the Bureau would be carrying out a lot of facts findings through crew and passenger interviews, working with relevant authorities to be able to determine the probable cause(s) of this accident”.
Olateru appealed to other local, state, federal agencies, and other relevant stakeholders to maintain effective cooperation and collaboration so as to ensure improved transportation safety in the entire area of Nigeria.
He reiterated thus, “We are committed to a swift response to the accident and serious incident occurrences through our well-equipped Command and Control Centre”.
The NSIB helmsman disclosed that “Accident reporting has also been simplified through our Mobile Application, which was introduced to interface with the public and make it easy for them to communicate with NSIB digitally”.
Members of the public have been persuaded to visit the Google play store and download the NSIB apps.
Olateru fervently solicited information from the general public throughout the nooks and crannies of the country to forward information of pictures, video, or recorded shreds of evidence to assist NSIB in conducting a comprehensive investigation.
He explained for the umpteenth time that “the NSIB is an autonomous multimodal investigation agency charged with the mandate to investigate air, rail, marine and other modes of transportation accidents, and serious incidents in Nigeria with the aim of identifying the probable causes and proffer safety recommendations that can prevent future reoccurrences”.
Olateru gave the goal and objective of the daunting task of the entire multimodal transport accident or serious incident investigation thus; “the purpose of accident investigation, however, is not to apportion blame or liability but to prevent future recurrence of similar incidents”.
