The momentary impasse between two erstwhile friendly East African Countries, the Kenya government and the Tanzania government, on the modality for exchanging air travel services among the duo, has been amicably resolved.

Kenya Airways had earlier secured approval under the 5th air freedom right to fly tourists from Nairobi, Mombasa, through its national airline, Kenya Airways, KQ, to Dar es Salam, Tanzania.

In exchange, the Tanzania government through its national airline, Air Tanzania, requested from Kenya government to fly in passengers and cargo to Nairobi, Kenya.

Kenya’s government got the request but unduly withheld its response from Tanzania’s government.
However, Kenya’s request had been granted by Tanzania, and her national airline had set a date to begin the tourists’ flight while investment had been made in publicity and promotions in all the social media about the flight.

Tanzania’s government quietly reached out to Kenya Airways to inform the airline the approval given to launch its flight on 22nd January, had been frozen. This in effect means the launch date already hyped in all the media- digital and traditional- would not hold.

Mr Abderahmane Berthé, Secretary General, African Airlines Association, AFRAA,

The letter to KQ made a terse reference to the Tanzania government’s request on behalf of Air Tanzania, which had been withheld.

However, KQ feigned ignorance of the request but promised to find out how the request was being handled by the arm of Kenya’s government concern.

Findings by KQ saw the Kenya government give favourable response to the Tanzania government’s request by approving, on Tuesday, 16th January 2024, for “freight traffic from Tanzania through Air Tanzania to Kenya in return.

Thus the impasse was amicably resolved and the set date by KQ to resume its tourist flight to Dar es Salam will no longer be encumbered.

Succinctly put, Air Tanzania Company Limited is now approved to exercise the 5th freedom privileges for all cargo services from Tanzania to Kenya.

Fifth Freedom right of The Air is the right or privilege, in respect of scheduled international air services, granted by one State to another State to put down and to take on, in the territory of the first State, traffic coming from or destined to a third State.
