Lagos Govt Soon To Launch E-Call Up For Trucks On Lekki-Epe Corridor

Over 100 NNPC trucks are parked at Dangote’s refinery to lift fuel. Their return trips from Lekki must be managed to avoid chaos on roads in that axis
Next Monday, 23rd September 2024, the Lagos State Government will roll out an electronic call-up system to preempt chaotic traffic conditions imminent at the Lekki-Epe Free Trade Zone, FTZ, of the state of aquatic splendour.
Note that over 100 petrol tankers, at the instance of Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, are presently parked at Dangote Refinery in Lekki, to lift refined petrol to the nooks and crannies of the country.
As a government that is responsive and responsible, having thought of the consequence of such a massive movement, and also taken cognizance of the truck’s movements in and out of Lekki Deep Sea Port, among others, and without an adequate framework to ensure sanity hence, the state government adopted a technology-driven solution for truck movements in the Lekki-Epe Corridor.
Explaining the rationale for the deployment of technology to manage road traffic in the Lekki-Epe axis of Lagos state, the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the e-call up system will synchronize the movement of trucks assessing the Lekki Deep Seaport and other industries within the corridor, starting from Eleko junction to Lekki Free Trade Zone.
Also speaking in the same vein, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, who is saddled with the enforcement of the e-call-up system explained that interim arrangement is being put in place to decongest the roads through evacuation of all illegal tankers from the red zone.
Giwa further said a joint task force of the State government, Local Government Authorities, Local Council Development Authorities, LGAs/LACDAs, Security Agencies and other Stakeholders, have been saddled with strict enforcement hence, urged truck operators and logistics companies to comply with the new system for the benefit of everybody, corporate and individuals.
According to a media statement by the transportation ministry, signed by Bolanle Ogunlola, (Mrs,), Deputy Director, Public Affairs, “the e-call up system, an advanced digital platform, is designed to regulate the entry and exit of trucks in the Lekki-Epe area”.
That goal the statement said would be achieved “by scheduling and coordinating their (trucks) movements. This system would help prevent the chaotic traffic situations often caused by the indiscriminate parking and movement of trucks within the corridor”.
Ogunlola described the Lekki-Epe corridor as, “a key economic hub in Lagos, is home to numerous industries, including the Lekki Free Trade Zone, the Dangote Refinery, and the Lekki Deep Sea Port”.
She noted “The efficient movement of goods and services in this area is crucial for the state’s economy, making the e-call-up system an essential tool for sustainable development”.
