The Lagos State Government has begun the construction of a commercial storage facility at Mile 2, Amuwo-Odofin area, with the view to eliminating the traffic congestion caused by container carrying trucks on the roads.
The statement from the office of Public-Private Partnerships, of the state government, revealed that a project is a form of public-private partnership.
According to the statement issued by Mr Ope George, Director-General, Office of Public-Private Partnerships, it was made known that Messrs Mainland Freight Ltd, is the partner solely funding the construction at the Mile 2 jetty.
Mr Ope George said the commercial cargo facility will be constructed on a portion of land at the jetty measuring 6,400 square meters and when it finally comes on stream will be operated on a Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis for ten years.
George stated that the facility would have the capacity to accommodate a minimum of 200 containers at any given time.
The government statement explained that the project will help to decongest traffic mostly caused by container carrying trucks on Lagos roads and also help reduce the dangerous gases emanating from the vehicles.
The Director-General described the project as a catalyst that would stimulate the economy of the State and create many direct and indirect employment opportunities while enabling the diversion of up to 24,000 units of containers from road transportation to the sea through barge services.
