NiMet Envisages Heavy to Low Rainfall, Urges All to Be on the Watch

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NIMET, has warned citizens to be cautious of the effect of rainfall between Tuesday, 29th August – Thursday, 1st September 2022, as the intensity of the rain will oscillate between Low, Heavy, and Moderate rainfall on the days’ forecast.
According to the forecast which advises that everyone should be on the watch, it announces that Heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Kaduna, Niger, Bauchi, Plateau, the Federal Capital Territory, FCT and Nasarawa States, especially on Thursday, 1st September 2022.
NiMet weather forecast notes that “Moderate to Heavy rainfall is expected over Kwara, Oyo, Kogi, Ogun, Ekiti, Ondo, Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Borno, Gombe, Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Enugu, Abia, Imo, Anambra, Rivers, Edo and Delta States.
However, Low to Moderate rainfall is expected over the following states, Kebbi, Niger, Ogun, Bornu and parts of, Kaduna, Kwara, Ekiti, Gombe, Taraba, Kogi, Osun, Ondo, Edo, Enugu, Anambra, Delta, Bayelsa, and Ogun. Residents are all cautioned to be wary of possible hazards
While other states not included among those stated above are likely to have Light or No rains.
NiMet CAUTIONS
As a result of the Heavy rains expected over parts of central cities and the moderate rainfall expected over the southeastern parts of the country for two consecutive days, there are chances of flash flooding of roads, low-lying settlements and river channels.
Also, the moderate and heavy rainfall events are expected to be accompanied by strong winds especially over the northern and central states during the forecast period.
Hence, the public is hereby advised to avoid low-lying terrains, not to drive through running water, clear waterways of debris, and avoid standing under trees and unsecured structures during the rain.
Also, switch off electrical appliances before the rains and not during it to avoid electric shock, be prepared for this event to avoid damages from weather-related hazards and watch out for updates, the weather update advises.
AREAS WITH A LIKELIHOOD OF NO METEOROLOGICAL HAZARDS
According to NiMet, the following states are of a strong likelihood of being free of meteorological hazards. They are Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Bauchi, Plateau, Nasarawa, Benue, Kebbi, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ondo, Lagos and parts of FCT, Kwara and Ekiti states
