The management of Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, has expressed its condolences to the families and friends of the deceased and injured passengers involved in a ghastly boat accident last Thursday, and Friday, the 4th and 5th of January 2024, respectively.

A media statement from NIWA, and signed by Jibril Darda’u, General Manager, GM, Corporate Affairs, said the boat mishap occurred by 7 am, at Umumu Anam, in Anambra West LGA of Anambra state.

The statement revealed that the sad incident involved a passenger boat traveling from Idah in Kogi state, to Onitsha in Anambra state with about 50 passengers on board.

According to NIWA, preliminary investigation revealed that the wooden engine boat rammed into a snag on the water channel and capsized, leaving eight (8) persons confirmed dead at the scene, while 38 others were rescued immediately.

The statement confirmed that “recovery efforts are ongoing and the Authority will provide detailed information to the public as soon as the field officers report back to the headquarters”, NIWA affirmed.

NIWA as a regulator of water transport in Nigeria, reassured the general public that the authority will continue to do all within its mandate “to ensure safer inland waterways for the movement of people and goods across our inland waterways”, it said.

The statement added that the search and rescue operation was “ongoing and the Authority will provide detailed information to the public as soon as the field officers report back to the headquarters”, it concluded.

At NTH, our hearts go to those mourning the loss of their loved ones, and pray for the quick recovery of the injured.
