Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos State Governor

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has announced that the state’s weekly cleaning program would be led from the front, by senior state government officials.

Governor Sanwo-Olu who announced on Sunday, during a sanitation sensitization exercise at Campos playground, Lagos Island, added that the state will start a weekly community-based sensitization and awareness exercise that will involve all residents in Lagos State.

Sanwo-Olu said the State Government officials would “lead from the front every week by going round to join residents in the cleaning of their environment in a voluntary manner while preaching the message of environmental cleanliness”.

Furthermore, the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, on Wednesday, debunked the news making the rounds in social media as fake. He said that the State government had not re-introduced the monthly environmental sanitation and that there was no mass movement being mobilized to restrict peoples’ movement during the environmental exercise last Saturday in July.

The statement signed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, described the information as fake in its entirety.

He described the viral fake news as the work of mischief makers keen on creating aggravated confusion among the good people of Lagos state.

Tokunbo Wahab added that there was no time that Mr. Governor made pronouncement that the monthly exercise and restriction would start in July or any other month for now.

The Commissioner, therefore, urged all residents to imbibe the culture of cleaning their surroundings all the time, and not wait until the government declares a particular month for commencement of sanitation or restriction of movement
