Red Line Train Mass Transit to be launched later in the month
As the Red Line urban mass transit train project which will commute people from Marina to Agbado Station, is completed, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, PBAT, has been given the honour to commission the project at a later date towards the month end of February 2024.
Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, disclosed far-away Dalian, in China, while on an inspection visit to the headquarters of China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation, Dalian.
According to a member of the entourage, Jubril Gawat, the Senior Special Assistant, SSA, digital media said, the rolling stock corporation assured the Governor of delivering the orders as scheduled- before the year runs out to harmonize with the existing plan by the government to achieve gradual and progressive coverage in the number of trips and in the volume of commuters to be freighted on the scheduled trips.
Sanwo-Olu reiterated his government’s commitment to providing alternatives to commuters as a way to mitigate the traffic chaos that often eats up the people’s travel time within the metropolis.
He pointed out that the importance of transportation can be perceived in the government’s T-H-M-E-S agenda wherein the first letter T. stands for Transportation and Traffic Management.
However, the leadership of China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation reassured the Governor that production was ongoing as scheduled the procedures would be strictly adhered to, and the delivery date given became sacrosanct.
Recall that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, PBAT, laid the preliminary work on the light rail mass transit in the metropolis about 20 years ago when he was the Governor of Lagos State.
It was at this time the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, LAMATA, emerged and saddled with the comprehensive theoretical framework, and studies in intermodal transportation that will move the teeming population of commuters, without congestion especially to the road.
Hence, the emergence of the promotion of water transport culminated in the improvement of all the jetties, the provision of intra-city ferry service. The road also received improved attention. Luxurious buses were provided. Dedicated lanes known as Bus Rapid Transit Lane, BRT Lane, were created to ensure timely and rapid transportation of workers, traders, and students to their various destinations in good time.
Thereafter the light rail now came into the picture and began to receive attention. The legwork that sunk into the project was massive. Reclaiming the rail track corridor, compensation to those to be displayed even though most occupants took possession of the piece of land after the government had earmarked and set out most of the land for the mass rail transit project.
In the spirit of democracy, and of a government in power to facilitate a better life for its citizens, the government had to eat the humble pie, dialogue with concerned house owners, and compensate citizens involved to reclaim most of the parcels of land for the urban mas train service. Thereafter construction started. Laying of tracks among others before this present lofty heights which is completed by Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu.
