Restoring passengers confidence crucial to airlines’ recovery, growth- AFRAA

Indigenous African airlines in their bid to recover the losses induced by COVID-19 pestilence have been urged to deploy every means at their disposal to restore passengers’ confidence in air transport.
Also identified as very crucial and urgent was the opening up of African skies and increasing the share of African carriers in the African market.
The African airlines were also urged to ensure they wrestle from foreign airlines who had dominated the African market by ensuring African airlines possess the larger chunk of the market share.
These notions were contained in the welcome address by the Group Chief Executive Officer, Ethiopian Airlines, Mr Tewolde Gebremariam, to participants at the 9th Aviation Stakeholders Convention, organized by the African Airlines Association, AFRAA, and sponsored by Ethiopian Airlines. The theme of the convention is, “Building Blocks For the Air Transport Industry Recovery”
He called on the individual government in each African states to make a deliberate policy for Financial support to the airlines with the view to making them stronger and be able to compete and have a grip hold of the African market which naturally should belong to the African airlines.
On assuaging the devastation, the coronavirus pestilence had unleashed on aviation especially the airlines, he called for united efforts among African airlines and African governments as the only way by which the impact of the pandemic can be stemmed.
He urged stakeholders both on the regional and international levels to make adequate financial resources to support the recovery of the aviation industry in Africa.
The Secretary-General, African Airlines Association, AFRAA, Mr Abderahmane Berthe, said 2021 would also pose a very challenging year to airlines as the daunting effect of coronavirus is still very much with the airlines’ industry.
Abderahmane Berthe said, “indeed 2021 will be yet another tough year for the travel industry which has been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic”.
He however assured participants that the 9th AFRAA Stakeholders Convention “will provide an ideal forum for stakeholders to dialogue, exchange knowledge and experiences for the sector’s recovery efforts and deliberate on feasible solutions to alleviate the industry challenges”, Abderahmane Berthe said
