The Lagos State government has debunked the report making the rounds on social media that the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had directed the officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, to stop arresting erring motorists.
In the flier that went viral on social media platforms on Wednesday, Sanwo-Olu was reported to have sternly warned the LASTMA officials and ordered them to immediately stop the arrest of erring motorists.
The flier also alluded that the Governor had directed LASTMA operatives to limit their functions to merely control traffic and not attempt any form of arrest.
The content of the flier among others says, “…Henceforth, no LASTMA officials should arrest any commercial or private motorist. The duty of LASTMA is to manage traffic and not to arrest anyone”.
A similar stunt was thrown into social media about this same time last year and was rightly debunked by the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Bolaji Oreagba.
The recent lie in the fake flier making the rounds in social media quoted Governor Sanwo-Olu to have reacted thus, “I have heard a lot of complaints, and any official that violates the rule of his work will be severely dealt with”.
The content of the flier quoting the Governor further states, “If at any time LASTMA officials make an attempt to arrest you or forcefully enter your car. Don’t argue with them, just allow them to enter and call these numbers: 08129928600 and 08129928550.” Those telephone lines have also been established as fake
Members of the public are hereby reminded the entire content of the flier is in its entirety a concoction of despicable elements desirous of creating confusion in society.
However, the Senior Special Assistant on New Media to the governor, Jubril Gawat, disowned the report, tagging it as ‘fake news’.
