DRUNK PAX IN CABIN

Two passengers on the humanitarian flight by Air Peace from South Africa to Lagos on Thursday, 9th of July 2026, have been arrested for smoking in the cabin and for smuggling hard liquor into the cabin and also for the abuse of alcohol on board the flight.

According to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Aviation Security (AVSEC), the unruly passengers were promptly arrested upon the aircraft’s safe landing.

A statement on Friday by the MMIA Police Commissioner, Ogunbode Olufunke, said the passengers’ conduct was unruly and unacceptable.

She said the Investigative Police Officer (IPO) in charge had elicited overwhelming evidence of the passengers’ conduct, which actually threatened the safety of all the souls on the flight that night.

According to a statement by Airport Police Command Public Relations Officer (PRO) ASP Mohammed Adeola, the two suspects allegedly lit cigarettes and smoked in the cabin against the no-smoking signage all over the cabin.

The statement added that the smoke sensor triggered an alarm, indicating an emergency and raising anxiety among the passengers which, resulted in a momentary disruption of the hitherto smooth flight experience.

The police account added that the smoke sensor triggered an alarm, which caused panic among the passengers, and an emergency was created among passengers and the cabin crew.

Police investigation has also revealed that an effort to restrain the passengers was vehemently resisted, but it provided the opportunity for closer scrutiny, which revealed that they smuggled an undeclared alcohol jar into the cabin from J’obourg.

The duo who are in Police custody the commissioner said, would appear in court as soon as the investigation is concluded.
