60 traffic gridlock points identified in Lagos; junction improvement projects to the rescue

Research by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation meant to find the causative factors hindering the smooth flow of traffic in the metropolis has identified 60 gridlock points across the state.


Hence, the Lagos state government, through the transportation ministry has synchronized traffic signal lights of 6 critical junctions and roundabouts in the state with the resultant increase in the vehicular capacity and improvement on the travel time.


Albeit, in the last fiscal year, the state government was able to accomplish 31 junction improvement projects across the metropolis which had positively impacted on the flow of vehicular movement around major roads in the state.

Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr Sam Egube, made these known at a media briefing on the year 2021 budget breakdown, at the Bagauda Khalto Press Centre, the Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja.


On the status of the ongoing light rail construction, Egube announced that the state government had secured a long term financing at a single-digit interest rate.


He said the facility had boosted the government resolve to give impetus to the 27 kilometre Blue Line rail which will run from Marina to Okokomaiko
The Transportation Commissioner, Dr Frederick Oladehinde, who was present at the budget breakdown for the year 2021, highlighted the focus of his ministry towards accomplishing its tasks for the current fiscal year through a three-pronged approach.


Dr Oladehinde said his ministry this year, will be preoccupied with the task of optimizing the current junction improvement network by enhancing the capacities of the junctions throughout the state.


He added that modernization of the entire public transport sector processes and procedures will be achieved in the current fiscal year, while the ministry will vigorously explore the use of technology to optimize enforcement of the reviewed Lagos State Road Traffic Laws.
