Air France’s Boeing 777

A wide-body aircraft operated by Air France, a Boeing 777-300ER, with registration mark F-GZNT, conducted an emergency landing at the Abidjan Félix Houphouët Boigny International Airport (ABJ), in the wee hours of Thursday, 19th December 2024.

The Air France Boeing 777 with flight number AF990 initiated its flight from Charles De Gaulle Airport, Paris, (CDG) and its destination was Oliver R. Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg (JNB).

While cruising, the diversion was initiated as the flight was transiting the Gulf of Guinea on the flight plan track for Johannesburg. The Commander declared an emergency and squealed the transponder code 7700.

Hence, Air France Flight number AF990 descended from the cruising altitude to FL160 for the diversion airport. The crew reportedly maintained the emergency transponder code 7700 for a priority approach and safely landed at ABJ.

However, concrete information on the circumstance that warranted the diversion could not be elicited from reliable sources, and the bits and pieces sourced from the grapevine have yet to be confirmed.

According to AirNav Radar, the aircraft was attended to on ground by the flight engineer, and in about an hour and a half, the commander called the tower for clearance and was promptly granted. The flight ultimately arrived the airport of destination safely.

Results from Fact-checking revealed that the Boeing 777-300ER was registered as F-GZNT. It was also revealed that the aircraft is 8.8 years old.
