Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has reiterated that the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line project will be put into service for Lagosians by the first quarter of 2023.

Governor Sanwo-Olu gave reassurance during his inspection tour last Sunday, of five stations out of the eight (8) earmarked for the redline train mass transit from Agbado to Oyingbo in the first phase.

The project which according to its architect, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), has the capacity to transport 500,000 passengers daily, the Governor said, would be completed by the year-end of 2022, to commence operations in the first quarter of 2023.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done and said the most difficult aspect of the project had been surmounted while the project was in its final phase.

He said the precast beams and other concrete fittings were being coupled to the constructed structures.
Governor Sanwo-Olu who made the fourth inspection tour for this year, of the 37-kilometre-long rail infrastructure with its various stations and terminals, visited the Agege Terminal, the Iconic Ikeja station, Mushin Terminal, Yaba and Oyingbo stations, among other project sites.

He said the construction work on the overpasses was at different stages of completion but he gave assurance that all works would be done by 2022 December.

The Governor said the work on the bridge on Awolowo Way onto Agege Motor Road and inward Mongoro Bus Stop remained on track and would finish by the end of October.

Sanwo-Olu said the Mushin overpass, which crosses from Kayode Street at Ikorodu Road to Agege Motor Road in Mushin, and the one at Yaba from Tejuosho exiting onto Murtala Muhammed Road would be completed by November.

To eliminate human interference with the rail corridor, the Governor said the rail passageway would be walled off the residential areas. This, he said, would also prevent encroachment and unapproved commercial activities around the corridor.

The rail mass transit is being managed by Eko Rail under the Concession Agreement while the owner remains Lagos State Government. The planned electrification is 1500 V DC overhead catenary System with the length of 35 km (22 mi)
