BUS COLLISION WITH TRAIN: Driver charged with manslaughter

*** Bus driver charged with six counts of Manslaughter and ten counts of Grievous Body Harm.

*** The train had 1000 passengers on board when it plowed into the bus
*** Six fatalities and about 96 others inflicted with various degrees of injuries
The Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution, DPP, has established a prima facie case of Manslaughter, and Grievous Bodily Harm, against Mr. Oluwaseun Osibanjo, driver of the ill-fated Lagos State Government, LASG, staff bus that collided with a train at PWD intersection, along Oshodi-Ikeja highway, Lagos.
Recalled that on the morning of the 9th of March 2023, a LASG staff bus, at the PWD railway intersection, along Oshodi-Ikeja highway, Ikeja, collided with the train traveling from Ibadan to Yaba, Lagos, with about 1000, passengers on board, and dragged the bus with 96 passengers on board, along its tracks until it came to a stop at Sogunle, a suburb of Ikeja, Lagos State.
A media statement by the state government, and signed by the Director of Public Affairs, Lagos State Ministry of Justice, disclosed that “the driver of the staff bus on the day of the crash, Mr. Oluwaseun Osibanjo, was apprehended and handed over to the Police for investigation and possible prosecution by the State.
The media statement said the driver will be charged with six (6) counts of Manslaughter and ten (10) counts of Grievous Body Harm”.
According to Sections 224 and 245 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, both offenses -Manslaughter, and Grievous Bodily Harm- ran afoul of the law.
The horrific incident according to the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, resulted in six fatalities and about 96 others inflicted with various degrees of injuries. The injured victims were hospitalized across many Government Hospitals in the State.
The Office of the D.P.P. will immediately file charges against the Driver.
However, the statement by the Justice Ministry added a caveat that the “driver’s arraignment before the High Court of Lagos State shall be delayed until he is fully fit to stand trial, having sustained serious injuries during the accident”.
