The Lagos State Government in conjunction with the management of the Nigeria Ports Authority, NPA, have called for the withdrawal of all military checkpoints on the Apapa-Tin Can corridor and other trade based checkpoints have been rearranged accordingly.

The Special Adviser on Transportation to the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, Hon Olutoyin Fayinka, announced that the Special Mobile Courts created by the state government will give more than usual attention to traffic infractions from that corridor because of its importance to the national economy.

Rising from a Stakeholder meeting with Transport Unions, the Special Adviser announced that all the checkpoints on the Apapa-Tin can corridor stood disbanded and any unauthorised checkpoints shall invoke the full wrath of the law.

Fayinka noted that intelligence reports had revealed most checkpoints mounted on that axis were to extort motorists and invariably hindered the smooth flow of traffic.

He said the state government will bring to book anyone found culpable of flouting the current checkpoints arrangement as jointly streamlined by the state government and the Nigeria Ports Authority, NPA.

Fayinka explained that “trucks will no longer be stopped for ETO at Ijora Badia (LPC axis), Mile 2 Under and Over the bridge, UBA (TCIPC corridor), Truck movement will not be interfered with at NAGAFF, Area B, RRS Marine Bridge, 7up, Fidelity Roundabout, Etisalat Roundabout (LPC axis) and RRS (TCIPC corridor)”, he said.

A media statement signed by Hon Olutoyin Fayinka explained that each of the checkpoints had been assigned specific agencies for proper oversight.

The Governor’s Special Adviser explained further that some checkpoints will be manned by the NPA alone, while some others will be assigned to the NPA and the Lagos State Government for adequate oversight.

The statement noted that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Rapid Response Squad, RRS and the Nigerian Police Force, NPF, will manage specific points independently without interference from any other agencies, while Military Checkpoints will no longer be tolerated along the Port Corridors, Fayinka emphasised.

The Special Adviser on Transportation, however, warned the unions and hoodlums that usually extort Motorists along Tincan, to henceforth desist from the illegal activity as they had severally been found inhibiting the smooth flow of traffic on the corridor.

Hon Olutoyin Fayinka appealed to stakeholders to cooperate with the new arrangement and be determined to make a success of it by engendering smooth flow of traffic along the port access road thus facilitating the ease of doing business and positively impacting the national economy.
