The Lagos State Government has begun broad engagement with stakeholders on the ways and means of stamping out the perennial traffic gridlock from the Apapa Port/Wharf areas.

To that end, the state government is at the advanced level of engagement with a private sector player for the provision of modern parking space where tankers could temporarily park while awaiting their individual call-up for loading by ETO.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, disclosed this during an interactive meeting at the Ministry of Transportation, Alausa, Ikeja, with relevant stakeholders including officials of the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) on the continuous search for a permanent solution to the notorious Apapa port traffic gridlock.

Hon. Sola Giwa said the government of Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu was leaving no stone unturned to ensure improved travel time for all commuters and motorists in Lagos state.

Attendees at the meeting were unanimous in constituting a committee with the mandate to accommodate other stakeholders into the “call-up” system introduced to encourage orderliness in parking, especially among oil tanker vehicles, and to provide a holistic solution to the entire perennial traffic challenge around the Apapa axis.

Speaking earlier at the meeting, Comrade Kilanko Solomon, who represented the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, commended the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, for working round the clock to ensure the free flow of traffic around Apapa, and other parts of the State.

He however said his organization was ready to cooperate with the Lagos State Government in providing lasting solution to the perennial traffic around the entire Apapa-Port areas.

Other stakeholders at the meeting include officials of the Nigeria Port Authority, NPA, MOMAN, PTD Lagos Zonal Command, NUPENG, STIC, Ardova Plc, Conoil, and officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA.
