Babajide Sanwoolu flags off the construction of Agbado-Marina rail mass transit

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwoolu, has flagged off the construction of the much touted ‘red line’ rail project that will traverse Agbado to Iddo in Ebutte Metta, Lagos mainland and terminate at Marina, Lagos Island.
The 37km rail mass transit project when completed will boast of the capacity to freight 1million persons per day.
According to Governor Sanwoolu while performing the ground breaking ceremony at the site of the project in Ikeja, he disclosed that the light rail would become operational by the last quarter of 2022.
The Governor said that, “since efficient transportation is the backbone of any economy, we are happy to be committing this investment in our transport infrastructure, so that our people can meet their daily targets and aspirations”.
He further said, “this all-important transport project we are all gathered to witness today represents a major step in the right direction.”
At the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu also presented cheques to property owners affected by the right-of-way and described the project as part of his government’s effort to deliver quality infrastructure for an efficient, effective and economical transport system in Lagos State.
Information from the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, LAMATA, indicated that the rail corridor will be constructed in three phases. The first – Agbado-Iddo – will be completed in two years and will share the track with the Lagos-Ibadan Railway Modernisation Project up to Ebute – Metta.
Also, the redline will have a dedicated track from Ebute-Metta to Oyingbo and shall reduce travel time from about two and a half hours to just 35 minutes. The passenger capacity of the first phase is estimated at 500,000 per day and when fully operational, it shall freight about a million passengers per day.
Among other dignitaries present at the event was the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi and top functionaries of the Federal Ministry of Transport and that of the Nigeria Railway Corporation, NRC.
