CAF Doping Doctor Died Not from Stampede at MKO Stadium Abuja, But from Heart Attack- NFF

Late CAF Doping Control Officer, DCO, Dr Joseph Kabungo

The Confederation of African Football – CAF Doping Control Officer, DCO, Dr Joseph Kabungo, who collapsed at the MKO Abiola International Stadium Abuja, died not from the stampede or choking environment at the stadium but died of Cardiac arrest.

This fact was disclosed by the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF.

The Nigeria football governing body, NFF, said Kabungo who was a DCO during the World Cup play-off between Nigeria and Ghana, suddenly slumped while walking towards the dressing room.


The NFF statement said immediately doctors of both teams, Nigeria and Ghana and other medical personnel present promptly administered Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation ( CPR ) on him and was thereafter rushed to the hospital where he was certified dead shortly after the game.

NFF Secretary-General, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, said the NFF commiserated with FIFA/CAF, Zambia FA and the family of Dr Kabungo for the great loss.

Reiterating the statement of fact issued by the NFF, the General Coordinator for the game, Kabeli Besilene, said Dr Kabungo’s death was not related to the violence that occurred at the end of the match in the MKO Stadium.

All of us at NTH deeply sympathized with the immediate and extended families of the deceased, the African Football Confederation and FIFA for the death of CAF Doping Control Officer, DCO, Dr Joseph Kabungo.
