Dust plume to reduce visibility mostly in the North; pilots, drivers charge to be twice careful

Pilots, train and motor vehicle drivers in Nigeria especially those servicing the northern part of the country have been put on alert against the raised plumes of dust with the strong potential to inhibit visibility.


A media statement from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency, NiMet, said the dust raised in the wee hours of 1st January 2022, from a dust source region, Faya Largeau in Chad Republic, in the morning hours of 1st of January, 2022, will begin to impact the weather in Nigeria as from 5am, on the 2nd January.

The statement announced that the plume of dust dispersed towards Nigeria, will reduce visibility ranges in the northern parts of the country with effect from the wee hours of Sunday, 2nd January 2022.

Hazards of driving a motor vehicle or riding motorcycle in dusty environment

According to the statement, “Cases of thick to moderate dust haze is expected over the extreme North”.
Areas expected to be most affected include Yobe, Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe and Borno where horizontal visibilities should be around 1000m and below.

Cockpit crew have been specially warned that “Flight operations may be disrupted therefore airline operators are required to pick up their flight folders and adhere to regulations, especially at aerodromes in the Northern parts of the country.

Moreover, “Road users are advised to drive slowly and carefully due to poor visibility during this period. People with respiratory problems should also take caution”, the statement urged.
