Fed Govt Directs FAAN to Relocate Headquarters to Lagos

The federal government has directed the management of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, to immediately commence the process of relocating to Lagos in earnest.

This information is contained in a memo that emanated from the Managing Director/Chief Executive, MD/CE, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, sent to the Director of Human Resources and Administration, DHR&A, for necessary action.

The memo dated 15th of January 2024, and titled, “SUBJECT: RE-RELOCATION OF FAAN HEADQUARTERS FROM ABUJA TO LAGOS”

Mrs. Kuku stated in the memo that, “the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has directed that the headquarters of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, should be relocated from Abuja to Lagos”.

Hence, the memo requested the Director of Human Resources and Administration, DHR&A, to furnish the management with all the logistics that will be required to actualize a smooth transition in consonance with the directive and the relocation’s possible impact on the organization to be presented to management for further consideration.

The Managing Director concluded the two paragraphs memo with a charge thus; “consequent upon the above, you are requested to provide the implication of the relocation to management”.

Recall that at the most unwholesome period, in the heat of the COVID-19 pandemic ravaging the world in 2020 was the time the former minister thought it fit to compel all aviation agencies to relocate to Abuja.

In an attempt to demonstrate that the ministry was dead serious about the relocation order, a complete multimillion naira one-story building that was the headquarters of the then Accident Investigation Bureau, AIB, now Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau, NSIB, was pulled down by the minister Hadi Sirika.

Since 2022 when the ultra-modern edifice was demolished, the land still lies fallow and some staff are still in Lagos because all the agencies that were scampered to Abuja, none had enough office space for its staff.

However, since the relocation was done by fiat and obviously with little thought on the welfare of the workers and its impact on workers productivity, officers are packed like 7 or 10 in an office space which is less than the size of a standard one room.

Under the condition which was a disincentive to productivity, workers are compelled to come up with a roaster to enable them share office for few days in a week. A set will stay at home for some days, to allow another have a feel of office. There has since been constraint of space.
