FG Approves N3.23bn to Procure Scanners for Five Int’l Airports

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) at its last sitting for the month on Monday, 27th November 2023, approved the sum of ₦3.23bn for the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, to purchase five state-of-the-art scanners for the five international airports.
According to Aviation Minster, Festus Keyamo, the scanners will be mounted at the designated international airports strictly to thwart narcotics trafficking, and detect other sundry contraband.
While addressing the state house media corps, Keyamo enumerated the airports for the installation of the scanners as, Murtala Mohammed International Airport, MMIA, Ikeja, Lagos, Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, NAIA, Abuja, Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, MAKIA, Kano, Port Harcourt International Airport, PHIA, Omagwa; and the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, AIIA, Enugu.
Keyamo explained that the scanners became very necessary following the complaints of passengers whose bags have to be physically searched while going through the airports security checks.
He said the government opted for the scanners in adopting the best practices as done by the transportation safety authority, TSA, in the United States, thus reducing the burden of facilitation passengers are more than often compelled to experience.
