FG to Shut Down 3rd Mainland Bridge from Midnight 26th-28th December

The Federal Ministry of Works, FMW, says it will shut down the Third Mainland Bridge for a total of 72 hours beginning from midnight of Saturday, 26th December, to 28th December 2020, to allow for sensitive concrete work on the expansion joints.
Controller of Works for Lagos, Engr. Olukayode Popoola, who made the announcement said the 72-hour total closure of the bridge will begin midnight on Saturday, and ends at midnight on Tuesday, to enable the contractor cast concrete on the expansion joints.
Popoola announced that construction works had reached the stage for casting concrete on additional three expansion joints saying, “there is going to be a total closure of Third Mainland Bridge in order to allow for the casting of three numbers of expansion joints on the Island-bound lane”
He explained that “the effective date of the closure will be from 12:00 midnight on 25th of December. So, people will be allowed to use the Third Mainland Bridge to celebrate Christmas”.
Popoola further narrated on the timeline thus, “by the time the Christmas is winding down which is 12:00 midnight, we are going to close it so that we will be able to cast the concrete on Saturday the 26th, Sunday 27th and the reopening will be on December 28th midnight”.
He explained that when the concrete is cast, it will require 72 hours to set. He further gave the rationale for the total closure that, “it will prevent vibration of the bridge. If we allow vehicles to be moving on one lane, there is going to be vibrations and the concrete will not set properly,” he said.
The Federal Works Controller said that all the alternative routes are in good condition and traffic regulatory agencies have been deployed to effectively divert and manage traffic to avert gridlock.
