HORROR IN THE AIR: Passenger stabs air hostess in the neck
3 min readMr. Nelson Montgomery, the 39-year-old passenger who attempted to murder a female cabin attendant
A male passenger who charged at a female flight attendant with the shard of a broken glass cup/bottle clutched in his hand threatened to cut off the lady’s head should anyone in the cabin dare to rescue her.
The unsuspecting flight attendant was under the firm grip of the aggressive passenger who, in a jiffy, placed the broken bottle firmly on the female attendant’s throat and barked that any attempt to rescue her would make him sever the female attendant’s head from her neck.
What a horror after a safe landing caused by the refusal of the passenger, Nelson Montgomery, to comply with the deboarding arrangement as being conducted by the female cabin crew, led to a hot altercation and the ensuing life threatening brawl.
However, the passengers were not deterred by the threat as eight among them determined and resolutely launched a counterattack with the view to disarm the aggressor.
The swift response of the good-spirited passengers witnessed various forms of cautious arm-grabbing, arms-locking, and unlocking from tight grips, which succeeded in rescuing the flight attendant with minimum injury and subdued the raging passenger.
This exclusive incident or accident in the cabin? (we await NSIB or ICAO classification) happened in a Delta flight midweek, from Atlanta to New Orleans.
The aggressor, by the data on his ticket, is named Nelson Montgomery. The eight rescuers succeeded in disarming Montgomery and rescued the attendant with injuries inflicted all around her neck.
A passenger on the Delta Airbus A321 jet, Raquel Davis, told The Times-Picayune, of US, she was impressed that the crew kept the rest of the passengers calm.
Davis said: “It’s surprising that nobody was raising a ruckus. It was weird in a good way.”
Another passenger on board the flight told WVUE-TV reporter that Montgomery seemed to have inflicted injuries on himself before attacking the cabin attendant as he was bleeding profusely from the neck.
The passenger said further that, evidence of blood trail from Montgomery’s seat up to the front where he walked up to attack the lady, revealed blood stains in all the seats he touched.
However, by the aggregate account of fellow travelers in the cabin, Nelson Montgomery, 39, they believed had injured himself with a sharp object even before he grabbed the Delta staff member who was confirmed to have suffered two superficial cuts.
The flight attendant was treated right on the scene/in the cabin, according to the sheriff´s office.
Consequently, the Captain rightly alerted the control tower of the horror and as the plane safely landed, law enforcement agents promptly accessed the cabin and in a jiffy got the grossly unruly passenger arrested.
The unruly passenger was accordingly charged with aggravated battery, simple battery, and disturbing the peace.
A mug shot provided by Jefferson Parish Sheriff´s Office showed Montgomery with a bandage on his neck after the outburst.
A statement by Delta said the plane was met by law enforcement personnel after “a reported customer issue”.
The airline spokesperson said: “Delta has zero tolerance for unruly behavior on our aircraft and in our airports. Nothing is more important than the safety and security of our people and our customers”.
