As a reaction to data at the disposal of the Lagos State Government through the transportation ministry on the predominant cause of motor accidents on Lagos roads, the state government has stepped up highway surveillance using Information Communication and Technology ICT to curb over-speeding, the highest culprit of road accidents, and its grievous social and economic consequences.

By the very fact of the data-driven revelation, the Transportation Ministry has deployed to the identified flash points, four new Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) across four locations in the state.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, at a recent news conference announced that a new Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) for tracking overspeeding has been installed in two check-points namely Alapere, whose speed limit is designated 80 kilometres per hour, 80km/h.

Osiyemi added that the second checkpoint with the ITS to track excessive speeding was installed at Nitel, on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, where the speed limit is designated at 60 kilometres per hour speed limit, 60 km/h.

The Commissioner also announced that E-police sites have been installed at Allen Avenue junction, and on Nurudeen Olowopopo Road.

He revealed that those E-Police sites have been equipped with high-definition cameras to monitor violations such as running red lights, lane indiscipline, (arbitrary changing lanes), illegal U-turns, and reverse driving on highways among others

He also said that all relevant road signs have been installed to inform motorists of the new regulations, in which their enforcement have begun immediately

Osiyemi further explained that offenders will receive short messages on their mobile phones -SMS notifications- from the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) detailing their violations and corresponding fines.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Mr. Olatunbosun Alake, reiterated that the ITS will check over speeding, lane-indiscipline through a technology-driven approach, in line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision for a smarter, safer, and more sustainable Lagos.

He further applauded the State Government for delivering the ITS which will reduce human intervention, create positive transportation outcomes and ensure quality road transportation that is safe for all.

However, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Olawale Musa, in his speech clarified that the initiative is not aimed at generating revenue but at ensuring voluntary compliance with traffic rules. He added that offenders will have the option to contest fines if they believe they were wrongly issued.

Mr. Olayemi Joseph, Senior Solution Architect at Huawei Technologies, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to support Lagos’ traffic management efforts with advanced ITS technology.

He explained that the system integrates information, communications, sensing, and computing technologies, enabling precise and efficient real-time transportation management.

It will be recalled that in addition to the newly deployed Intelligent Transportation Technology, (ITS), the State Government had earlier introduced technology-driven traffic management devices such as Automatic Number Plate Recognition, (ANPR), and Traffic Management Solution, (TMS) to reduce human interference.
