LASTMA Mandate Is to Ensure Free Flow of Traffic, Not Revenue Generation

The management of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, has reiterated for the umpteenth time that the agency was established exclusively to ensure the hassles-free flow of vehicular movement with dignity, honour and pride, and not established to function as a revenue-generating outfit for the Lagos state government.
Mr Bolaji Oreagba, General Manager/Chief Executive, LASTMA, re-echo this while explaining the reason for the creation of the agency 22 years ago, when he received the management of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to his office in Oshodi, Lagos.
The Head of delegation and Secretary, Economic Planning, Revenue Generation and Public, Private Partnership, (PPP) Honourable Agboola Lukman Dabiri, who was represented by Baba Shu’aibu Adukke, said his team was on a two-day working visit to understudy LASTMA’s new and innovative Road Traffic Management and Control in order to replicate the same outfit with the same capacity and capability at the FCT, Abuja.
Agboola Dabiri acknowledged the feat LASTMA had severally achieved over the years on the onerous task of traffic management in the most densely populated and most advanced smart city in Nigeria and on the West coast of Africa, Lagos state. He also noted with admiration that the efficient and effective management of traffic in Lagos state with the highest vehicular density in Nigeria and in the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, yet it had the smallest landmass, deserves commendation and emulation.
Explaining LASTMA’s modus operandi was the Director of Rescue Department, Mr Adeolu Joan, who represented the General Manager, Mr Bolaji Oreagba, said its operations are guided by various extant laws of the Lagos state public service.
Oreagba disclosed that to achieve effective coverage, the authority had in its nominal roll over 4000 personnel working assiduously to ensure the traffic across the metropolis flows freely with little or no hindrance.
He added that in maintaining sanity on the roads in spite of the exponential vehicular density, all road users from pedestrians to articulated vehicle drivers are guided by the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018 as amended.
The GM assured his guests and the entire Lagosians that, “LASTMA will continue to strive to achieve a Greater Lagos vision where effective and efficient traffic management will thrive, enjoy continuous improvement and an unmitigated increase in the socio-economic development of Lagos”, he said.
The visiting team is scheduled to visit other LASTMA operational Centers in Lagos State today, Thursday, 8th September 2022.
Management staff present at the meeting included all LASTMA Comptrollers, Head of Training Unit, Mr Marcauly Modupe-Ore, Director of Operations, Mr Peter Gbejemede, Mr Adebayo Taofiq (Director, Public Affairs Unit LASTMA), Mr Muazu Abdullahi (Deputy Director. Road Traffic Services FCT), Mrs Osho Deborah (Head of Operation DRTS), Mrs Caroline Okon (Assistant Director Revenue DRTS), Mrs Halima Mahmud (Principal Planning Officer DRTS) and Mr Abdulfatai Adewale (Admin. Officer I DRTS).
