MORBID FEAR OF CORONAVIRUS LEADS MAN TO SUICIDE, YET TESTS NEGATIVE

A man in Udupi, in the coastal Karnataka area of Southwest India, has committed suicide fearing that he had contracted Covid-19, but the result of his blood test later turned out negative.

According to the Udupi District Health Officer, Sudhir Chandra Sooda, Mr Gopalakrishna Madivala, who was 50 years of age, and had taken out his own life before the result was released, tested negative for coronavirus.


Gopalakrishna Madivala while alive, worked with the state’s road transport corporation, left a suicide note that he was suffering from Coronavirus and would like to quietly put his life to an end before a cursed virus does it for him. Madivala was reported to have hung himself to a tree in his courtyard at the thick of the night.

The KMC Manipal hospital’s forensic department confirmed that Madivala had no Covid-19 in his bloodstream but died from strangulation.

However, further investigation about the deceased and his medical record revealed he had some psychiatric problem while enquiries from his relations indicated that he did not exhibit any symptoms of the Covid-19 infection’
