The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has reaffirmed the integrity and capabilities of its consumer protection directorate operatives to promptly and adequately address passengers’ complaints at airports across the country and urged passengers to approach them whenever their services are required.

The Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection Directorate, Mr Michael Achimugu, asserted at a recent passengers-centric event at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

He said the agency and especially the Consumer Protection staff who have direct contact with passengers in the course of their flights had severally and collectively been found to be above board, immune to mundane filthy lucre other agencies’ staff are wont to exploit from unsuspecting passengers at the airport.

Speaking on a television program, Achimugu said, “Thanks to the efforts of our consumer protection officers. Call to duty had severally compelled some of them to pass the night at the airports. Most times under unfavourable conditions.

On the integrity of his team at the CPD, Achimugu enthused “I make bold and I’m proud to say that the NCAA’s officials at the airports are one of the very few, if not the only agency that has never been accused of extorting travellers at the airport.

Recall that the Acting Director General Civil Aviation, Ag DGCA, Capt Chris Najomo, once said at the CPD Portal launch in Lagos that, the portal was among measures put in place by the NCAA management to improve passengers’ experience and the CPD personnel service delivery to consumers.

According to him, the portal ensures airline passengers receive better information and an avenue to address their grievances at the airport.

Najomo further elucidated, “This portal offers a comprehensive platform where passengers can lodge complaints, access real-time data on airline performance, and monitor punctuality and on-time operations of the airlines.”

He caps it thus, “The NCAA Consumer Protection Portal is our proactive response to these issues, providing a robust system to protect and empower consumers,”

Speaking on the potential of the CPD Portal to calm fray nerves, Minister of Aviation And Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo said, “As a frequent flyer myself, I have seen first-hand, the rage of passengers who are either disappointed by delayed flights, cancellations or some ugly experiences on those flights. I have seen the rage, and this is a means (CPD Portal) by which they can ventilate that rage”.

Keyamo noted thus, “This initiative represents a significant step in our commitment to safeguarding the rights and interests of aviation consumers across our nation”, he said.

The Minister narrated that “In today’s rapidly evolving marketplace, consumers face myriads of challenges. From being unaware of their rights to navigating through complex regulations to addressing poor services or unfair practices hence, the need for a robust system to protect and empower consumers has never been more critical.” Mr Keyamo told stakeholders at the launch.
