NIWA condoles families of victims in recent boat accident in Niger

Operators of various kinds of machines for water transport has been warned to strictly adhere to the regulations on safe operations such as total refrain from night travel, compulsory use of life jackets and for the skippers and crew not to indulge in any kind of alcohol and abstain from other substance abuse.
These reminders were issued by the Managing Director, Nigeria Inland waterways Authority, NIWA, Dr George N Moghalu, while commiserating with the families of victims of the boat accident which occurred in Kija, Munyan local government area of Niger state.
In the media statement signed by the NIWA, MD, it stated that, “the authority is particularly pained by the unwarranted loss of lives and properties due to disregard for established rules and regulations guiding passenger ferry operations in the country”
The statement said with the fact that overloading is already criminalized some skippers and crew are still adamant. He added that the leadership of NIWA would not relent in its aggressive mass education on maritime safety for stakeholders especially the crew and the skipper.
Moghalu said the Niger state boat accident will be thoroughly investigated to determine the immediate and remote causes of the accident with the view to prevent future reoccurrence o similar accident.
He appeal to every one in the water transport value chain to always play by the rule as it will enhance safety of every on and most importantly impact positively on their profit margin.
