Owners of vehicles less than 5 years old exempted from routine inspection

Vehicle owners that are not more than five years old from the date of manufacture have been urged to obtain the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service, VIS, Exemption Certificate from the mandatory computerized routine inspection.
The Director, Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service, Engr. Akin-George Fashola, gave the reminder during the working visit by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Engr Hafeez Toriola, to the VIS head office at Ojodu, in Lagos State.
Engr. Akin-George Fashola, added that is the position of the law as stipulated in schedule 1, section 326 (10) of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, (TSRL) 2018.
Fashola further said the Pre-Registration inspections (Auto Vin) would have recorded such vehicles for exemption at their initial registration and documentation, and all that would be required from the owners of such vehicles is to get an Exemption Certificate from the VIS.
Lagos VIS helmsman further explained the rationale for the position of the law in this regard that, the exclusion is one of the ways to prevent the Computerized Vehicles Inspection Centers across the state from being over-clogged with vehicles.
LAGOS BEGINS ISSUANCE OF INTERNATIONAL DRIVER’S PERMIT
Also announced by Fashola was that, the Lagos State Government will soon commence the issuance of International Driver’s Permit effective from December 2022.
He explained that the issuance of the International Certificates for vehicles and International Driver’s Permits are in line with international requirements as specified in section 326 (U) of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, (TSRL) 2018, some of which he said include; class or description of vehicle and examination on the vehicles.
The Director also announced that the VIS had commenced clamp down on rickety commercial vehicles without proper documentation and safety standards as prescribed in section 12 (2) of the State’s TSRL 2018, hence warning all commercial vehicle operators to do the needful and avoid being caught on the wrong side of the law.
He solicited the support of other Law Enforcement Agencies in ensuring that Lagos roads are free of rickety vehicles.
Addressing the Vehicle Inspection Officers, the Permanent Secretary, Engr. Abdulhafiz Toriola admonished them to work in line with the mandate of the VIS by ensuring that all motor vehicles plying the roads across the state meet safety standards in line with International best practices.
He equally urged the Directorate to intensify its advocacy and safety drive, especially at this yuletide season, calling on Officers to come up with new initiatives that will improve their mode of operations.
