Airport restricted airside

Those residents in proximity to the airports’ perimeter fence nationwide have been warned never to dare to scale the fence with the view of using the airport premises as a footpath to connect other communities, or even gain access to the airport for legitimate business risk being shot if sighted by the armed security personnel at unholy hours, or a jail term after arrest and prosecution.

The management of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, alerted the general public to this grim fact in a media statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah Mrs.

The statement also appealed to those who do not have any business at the airport to stay away as anyone caught touting or loitering in the airport’s vicinity will be arrested and prosecuted.

Obiageli Orah also announced that the Military Commandant of Lagos Airport, Group Captain ED Okolo, had issued a “RESTRAINING ORDER” against anyone attempting to gain access to the runway of the airport through the perimeter fence.

Moreover, airport users had also been charged to operate within the ambits allowed by the bye-laws that guide the airport manager – FAAN- in the management of the airport, as the Joint Military Task Force, (JMTF), had stepped up its surveillance to ensure sanity in all the nooks and crannies of the nation’s airports.

Passers-by climbed a ladder to access Mafoluku area from a remote axis of Lagos airport. The particular spot has since been given attention by the airport management

Furthermore, those with lawful businesses to transact in the airports had also been advised to park at designated car parks, and avoid parking at drop-off zones to prevent their vehicles from being towed, and of which retrieval will attract a penalty.

Also put on notice of demolition “are every unauthorised or illegal structure around the airports would be pulled down”, the statement advised.

Perimeter Fences are not Security Fences. FAAN should have known that by now.
Many houses over the years, have shared their buildings with the airports perimeter fences , FAAN has failed to comply with ICAO Documents 8973 that requires 6 metre distance from public and private buildings or structure.

Where FAAN could not comply with this, the ICAO Audits of 2004 on MMA in particular has recommended that, a security fence (Annex17), be constructed where the perimeter fence (Annex14), cannot be enhanced to become a Security Fence.

I was surprised that the NCAA, in spite of FAAN not implementing the ICAO 2004 Recommendations could certify MMA.

FAAN would have no legal rights to shoot anyone if it has no SECURITY FENCE with bordering houses.

FAAN and NCAA should go back to the ICAO 2004 Audits Reports
