The fuel bowser tanker that experienced brake failure at Ikotun, Lagos State

A fully loaded articulated fuel bowser tanker with 42000 liters of fuel experienced brake failure thus causing multiple accidents as it rammed into four commercial tricycles and caused the death of two persons.

Thanks to LASTMA operatives who arrived promptly at the spot of the accident and succeeded in rescuing the other four victims alive.

A media statement from LASTMA identified the spot of the accident as Ikotun. The fully loaded fuel tanker registration number is given as JJJ 125. ??? The registration number of the commercial tricycles involved are; LSD 83 QM, AKD 690 QK, and AKL 87 QF.

On the casualties from the accident, the media statement explained that one of the riders of the commercial tricycle, and one of his passengers died instantly.

The statement said among the four (4) victims rescued by Lastma personnel were, two (2) pregnant women and two (2) children.

Those rescued were handed to Policemen from Ikotun Police Station who took them to the General Hospital for medical attention.

The LASTMA statement further highlighted that, a preliminary investigation had revealed that the fully loaded fuel bowser truck had a brake failure, thereafter lost control and tried maneuvering to avoid colossal damage yet crushed 3 tricycles by the valley around synagogue Church while going towards Ikotun.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) moved the tanker with those crushed tricycles to Ikotun Police Station.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Bolaji Oreagba, however, warned articulated vehicle owners and drivers to always ensure their trucks are roadworthy in all ramifications before embarking on any voyage so as to prevent avoidable destruction of lives and properties.

ANOTHER TRUCK UPENDED AT OJOTA SPILLING TWO 20 FEET CONTAINERS
A few hours after the Ikotun break failure of a fuel bowser tanker, and its casualties on Tuesday, 31st January 2023, two (2) 20 feet containers fell off a truck at Ojota by Odo-Iya-Alaro bridge.

A piece of travel advice from LASTMA warned motorists and commuters to explore alternate routes as there was no access for those driving inward Maryland from Ojota.

It further urged recalcitrant road users to note that heavy traffic on the other side had prevented counter-flow despite the bridge not being demarcated.

No doubt the menace from articulated vehicles and fuel bowser tanker trucks requires a drastic approach. Lives have more than often been wasted by fatal accidents that were preventable.
