UN strengthens customs anti-smuggling efforts in the maritime, donates equipment

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, UNODC, has donated Video Teleconferencing, VTC, CISCO WEBEX equipment to the Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, to aid the command’s gallant efforts toward total checkmate of smuggling at the Western Marine Command.
Miss Siji Song, led delegates from the UNODC office to the Nigeria Customs Service, WMC, to present the Video Teleconferencing, VTC, CISCO WEBEX equipment in fulfilment of the promise made last year, on the heels of the outstanding anti-smuggling performance of the command in 2020.
She said the equipment, will also assist the security agencies in a coordinated response to the fight against Piracy in the maritime industry.
Expressing gratitude for the gesture, the Controller WMC, Comptroller Olugbenga Peters, said that the equipment would be fully installed and put into optimum use when all the other complementary components are procured and retrofitted by the management of the Service.
He however warned smugglers to desist from the ungodly act, saying the officers and men of the command are resolute in enforcing federal government’s fiscal policies.
Recall that the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in 2020 made an outstanding seizure of Cannabis Sativa worth over N1 billion in a single seizure and the feat attracted the attention of various agencies, nongovernmental organizations and other partners to extend support to further strengthening the Western Command in its resolve to rid Western Marine of nefarious maritime activities
