US Imposes Visa Restriction on Nigerians Undermining Democracy from Flourishing

The government of the United States of America, USA, has announced that it has already imposed a visa ban on some Nigerians established to have acted inimical to the flourishing of democracy in the country.

An announcement by the US Secretary of State, Antony Binken, said “The United States is committed to supporting and advancing democracy in Nigeria and around the world”.

The public statement however affirmed that, “Today, I am announcing that we have taken steps to impose visa restrictions on specific individuals in Nigeria for undermining the democratic process during Nigeria’s 2023 elections cycle.”

In the statement posted on the website of the US State Department, Secretary of State, Antony Binken said “The United States is committed to supporting and advancing tenets of democracy here in Nigeria and the world.

According to the statement, these individuals, under US Immigration and Nationality Act, will be subjected to restrictions on visas to the United States under a policy covering those believed to be responsible for, or accomplice in, undermining democracy.

Mr Blinken further explained in his post about those already indicted that, “these individuals have been involved in intimidation of voters through threats and physical violence, the manipulation of vote results, and other activity that undermines Nigeria’s democratic process,” he wrote.

Blinken made further clarification that, the visa ban was not on a state as a corporate entity but, “the visa ban is specific to certain individuals and is not directed at the Nigerian people or the Government of Nigeria as a whole”, he explained.

He explained further that, the decision to take steps to impose visa restrictions, merely reflected the continued commitment of the United States to support Nigerian aspirations to strengthen democracy and the rule of law.
