Drivers’ union suspends strike; govt. to dislodge miscreants from bus stops statewide

Members of the Joint Drivers’ Welfare Association of Nigeria (JDWAN), have been assured of stepped-up enforcement by the state government with the law enforcement agencies to dislodge from Lagos roads, miscreants disguising as Union members to harass the legitimated drivers.
The Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa gave the assurance at a peace meeting over the weekend held in the board room of the Ministry of Transportation, Government Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja.
Hon Sola Giwa in a media statement said “the State Transport Unions have agreed to meet in the coming week to resolve the issue of alleged extortion and harassment leveled against the Union members by the Drivers with a view to resolving their differences and foster unity amongst transport workers in the State.
Giwa said the State Government will oversee the resolution process as it had done in the past in line with the White Paper on transport union activities of 2004, which recognizes the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
Earlier, the Chairman of JDWAN, Comrade Akintade Abiodun, reminded everyone present of the menace of extortion and harassment as well as maltreatment by the transport unions noting that they had informed the Union’s leadership of their grievances and had yet to get a positive response.
He declared pointedly that the maltreatment meted to his members was the singular reason the association embarked on the boycott of duty.
He, therefore, appealed to the State Government to uphold the unified N800 levy, and motivate the law enforcement agencies to enable them to be able to checkmate the excesses of the recalcitrant Transport Union members.
JDWAN however, agreed to call off the strike as all parties settled to meet in the coming week to address their differences amicably.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation Engr. Abdulhafiz Toriola, as well as executive members of the Park and Garages Committee, and the rank and file officers of JDWAN attended the meeting.
