Group threatens to shut down Abuja airport, NNPC plant

A social, economic and political pressure group has called on both the Federal Executive Council, FEC, and the National Assembly, NASS, to ensure an end to the reign of “one-man riot squad” in the administration of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC.
The pressure group by name, Niger Delta Peace Volunteers, NDPV, in a media statement threatened to “shut down the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja, and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), if government by 31st March 2021, failed to constitute and inaugurate the substantive board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC)”.
The NDPV in a statement signed by its General Secretary, Mr Alaska Jogodo, frowned at the approach of the Minister of the Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio, towards all crucial issues that touched on the soul of the people of Niger Delta and especially on the constitution of the substantive board for the commission.
The statement accused the Minister of handling issues with levity and since the common man on the street bears the brunt of NDDC leadership inertia, the group “will no longer fold its arms and allow the minister’s illegal status quo take center-stage in the NDDC”, the statement said.
The statement further noted that the federal government’s body language was loud enough to see that it had consistently closed its ears to the plea of several other organizations in the region for a better service delivery that will commensurate with the budgetary allocation to the commission.
The NDPV said: “We shall begin to escalate things to the point of disrupting institutions in the country to express our worries and anger”.
Alaska Jogodo in the statement alleged that socio-economic issues, safety and security of the Niger Delta were deteriorating by the day with nothing to address the challenge nor instil confidence in the people.
The NDPV media statement warned that “If by the end of this month, nothing is done to inaugurate the legally approved board, we shall mobilize to shut down the Abuja airport and the activities of the NNPC, to express our grievances over the sorry state of affairs in the NDDC characterized by a one-man show”.
The statement declared, “We shall liaise with groups such as the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) and other stakeholders to mobilize against the injustice in the region.
It added an anecdote that, “It is not possible for one man to cook the meal that can satisfy the entire region. We shall together chase out illegality in the commission even if we have to occupy airports and shut down every oil activities. We shall mobilize,” the NDPV statement concluded.
