Nigerian Customs Begins Investigation, Findings to Be Made Public

Management of the Nigerian Customs Service, NCS, has described as unprofessional and debasing, the conduct of one of its officers caught on camera soliciting for N5,000.00k bribe to facilitate speedy service while profiling a passenger at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Second Terminal, MMIA2, Ikeja, Lagos.
The media statement signed by the Chief Superintendent of Customs, who also functions as the National Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Aliyu Maiwada, said “Preliminary investigation confirmed the Officer is a member of the NCS at the Departure Hall of the International Airport”.
Maiwada confirmed that “a comprehensive investigation is underway to scrutinize the incident thoroughly, and appropriate actions will be taken”.
NCS media statement claimed thus, “Preliminary investigation revealed that the incident transpired at New Terminal, within the departure hall of Murtala Mohammed International Airport Lagos, and was captured on video by the involved passenger”.
It further clarified that “such behavior is entirely inconsistent with the core values of our service, and we are resolute in maintaining a transparent and accountable customs operation”.
However, the Nigeria Customs Service “encourages passengers and the public to report any instances of misconduct or corruption promptly”, the statement urged members of the public.
It claimed such “reports are crucial in upholding the integrity of our service and ensuring that officers adhere to the highest ethical standards of NCS”.
Nigerians have however been assured “the NCS is unwavering in its commitment to fostering a culture of transparency and accountability. The outcome of the investigation will be communicated to the public at the earliest opportunity.”
