NIGERIA’S CAA Suspends Dana Airlines Flight Operations

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, announces the suspension with immediate effect, of Dana Airlines’ Air Transport License, ATL, and its Air Operator Certificate, AOC.
The withdrawal of those two certifications tantamounts to a total grounding of the airline until further notice.
A media statement signed by Capt Musa Shuaibu Nuhu, Director General, DG, NCAA, says the suspension of those certifications is not only with immediate effect but it’s indefinite.
The statement’s timeline for the commencement of sanction says “with effect from midnight of Wednesday, 20th July 2022.”
Given the rationale for the suspension, the statement explains the sanction is in consonance with “Section 35(2), 3(b) and (4) of the Civil Aviation Act, 2006 and Part 1.3.3.3(a)(1) of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations (Nig.CARs), 2015”.
A further reason for the suspension the NCAA says “is the outcome of a financial and economic health audit carried out on the Airline by the Authority”.
The statement also points to the “findings of an investigation conducted on the airline’s flight operations recently, which revealed that Dana Airlines is no longer in a position to meet its financial obligations and to conduct safe flight operations” hence, the indefinite suspension.
The regulatory authority, however “acknowledges the negative effect this preemptive decision will have on the airline’s passengers and the travelling public and seeks their understanding.”
The DG in the statement and without equivocation affirmed that Nigeria’s CAA will not toy with safety standards “as the safety of flight operations takes priority over all other considerations,” he reiterates.
